Description

  • Virgin and Child
  • gilt and polychromed wood

Condition

There is wear to the polychromy throughout the surface. There is stable splitting throughout the sculpture, consistent with the material, including a large stable open split at the back of the head. Mary's proper left hand is lost and four of the pinacles of her coronet are lost. The middle two pinnacles of the coronet at the front are unstable and may be reattached. There is wear to Mary's proper right foot and to the rear pinnacles of her coronet. Christ's proper right hand is lost. There appears to have been some water damage to the wood, particularly evident at the bottom of the sculpture. There is some evidence of past worming.
