Condition
Overall the condition of the marble is very good. There is dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age, including dirt to the crevices of the foliage. There are minor chips and scratches throughout. There are a number of losses, including to the tops and edges of the reeds behind the figure and to the edges of the apron at the bottom on the proper right side and to the corner of the shawl at the back. There is some veining to the marble and a number of inclusions, consistent with the material, including a larger inclusion to the figure's proper left arm. There are a few small spots of residue to the top and back of the hair and four streaks of residue to the figure's proper right foot and ground. The base is in good condition with minor dirt and wear, including a few small chips and scratches around the edges.

Catalogue Note
Antonio Garella studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. He completed a number of prestigious monumental commissions including a public sculpture of Garibaldi in Pistoia dating to 1904. He contributed two statues to the Vittorio Emanuele II monument in Rome: L'Archtitettura and La Musica.
The present marble is typical of the Italian late nineteenth century interest in genre subjects with a strong emphasis on costume and dress. The elaborate costume is carefully recorded: the ribbing and lacing of the corset and the folds and ripples of linen are carved with consummate skill.
