Catalogue Note

The present marble appears to have been inspired by the Celestial Venus in the Uffizi Museum, Florence. The antique Venus raises her right hand to her coiffure whilst holding her falling drapery in her left. Here her pose is mirrored and the drapery is reduced to reveal more of the godess's slender form. The urn with its classicising motifs is another reference to antiquity. The treatment of the face and hair recalls French Rococco masters such as Joseph Marin and the sculptor also pays homage to the golden age of French art.
