In the Screams and Whispers Series, Mustafa Ozbakir creates striking portraits of female actors from cult movies. In the present work, the artist depicts a character from the 1966 Swedish Ingmar Bergman film Persona. Elisabeth Vogler is an actress who becomes mute during a performance. The film looks at her seclusion from her family while a nurse aims to break the silence.

Sometimes gazing directly at the viewer with pleading eyes, sometimes looking away, Ozbakir's portraits represent beautiful women with an expression of loss, despair and shock. The beautiful black and white face stands out on a background of rick, dark red which intensifies the effect of the gaze and evokes the sense of falling through an abyss.
