Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. There is scattered evidence of fine and stable craquelure with minute associated losses particularly in the heavily impastoed areas. Otherwise all other surface inconsistencies appear inherent to the artist's medium and working method. Under ultraviolet light inspection, there is no evidence of restoration. Unframed.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.

Catalogue Note

"Barceló has also concentrated on portraits. Here, humorously, the person portrayed literally emerges from the picture, not out of any zeal for relaism but because they are painted on surfaces that have a strong relief, thus playigng with aleatoric elements. The vision varies, too, as the spectator moves in front of the work, giving it sculptural qualities. The subjects portrayed are always people close to the artist, so that the works contain a documentary or, if you prefer, autobiographical element." - Enrique Juncosa (Exh. Cat., Miquel Barceló, London, 1994)
