Catalogue Note
This early work by Moshiri was painted at a time of hopefulness and perhaps rediscovery, when Iran was opening up to the West. While the subject matter of the dome is recognisable from the cultures of the East, the style in which it is drawn is bordering on the modern modes of Western art.
Moshiri's landscape is heavily influenced by his life in Shiraz. These two Sarve Naaz (Cypress Trees) are symbolic of enduring hardship and by combining this image with the lattice work within the dome, Moshiri had created early on in his career a highly inspired composition, but also one that would continue to influence his later work.
