Catalogue Note

On the stretcher of this work, the artist has inscribed:

Let us salute Brady Himmelman's Canteen in La Have N.S. and all the good old boys Victor Zinck - Fletcher Himmelman - Dan Getson - Lloyd Corkum - Harris Getson - Burleigh Hartling, I wish I had been born 30 yrs sooner.

Brady Himmelman captained the historic LaHave River ferry service as did his father before him.  The ferry was one of the two boats that transported passengers across the river.  The only time the service was not offered, other than in bad weather, was on Brady Himmelman's wedding night in 1955.  He docked the boat at 6 pm to spend the evening with his new bride, Ramona.  Himmelman also ran a canteen to provide for his family.
