Catalogue Note
Suzor-Côté excelled in painting genre scenes, stories of daily life. The people he captured on canvas, the habitants, shared his heritage. He took pride in his rural roots and delighted in portraying both family and the people in his Arthabaskan community in an elegant style engaged in their quotidien tasks.
As Lacroix capably notes, "Suzor-Côté was considered not simply a genre painter, but rather the painter of the soul, temprament and personality of French Canada's rural inhabitants."
