Catalogue Note

Riopelle was a resolutely non-representational artist. Yet, from the beginning of his formal career in painting, he continually fed on his natural surroundings, whether the lakes, woods in autumn or a sky split by flocks of Canada geese. Echoes of these mental images reverberate in this work, as they do in nearly all his work.
