Catalogue Note
As early as 1947, Shadbolt created a series of post-war works incorporating dogs as a central focus in his paintings, to express the pathos of the human condition.
Shadbolt went on in 1985, the year Storm with Dog was painted, to create a series of Coast Indian related paintings with their theme of mythology.
Perhaps the dog here howls in sympathy for the once great spiritual and historic native presence in Canada. Yet Shadbolt takes comfort in the new generation of First Nations artists who are now using their traditional stylistic images to create a new dramatic heritage.
