Catalogue Note

Martin has nearly always worked in series of paintings, which was his way of exploring an idea from several different aesthetic points of view. In the late sixties, Martin began a series of paintings he called Conclusion and Transfer. Each was a tribute to an artist he respected and each was abstract. He then made an exact replica of the first painting and both canvases were shown together as a single work. The stimulus for this series was, according to the artist, "a response to a remark of Marcel Duchamp's about the 'gap' in representational painting between the subject (the thing painted) and the object (the painting itself)."
