Catalogue Note

Although he derived his sense of space and colour from the Canadian landscape, and particularly following an epiphany he had when he flew over the northern bush when the autumn colour was at its height, in his studio, Iskowitz transformed or interpreted space and colour into quite different, and original, painterly qualities.  This rich and startling painting is a case in point. The autumn colours – red, yellow, and green – are there sure enough, but although somewhat arbitrarily selected and accompanied by the sky-blue and cloud-white, the composition is entirely abstract. The colour patches are like bright, puffy pillows seen against a deep violet ground. It's the keen and subtle balance of size, shape, and intensity of colour that displays Iskowitz's substantial talent in transforming his experiences into outstanding art.
