  • domestic yak, brass, wood
A. Two bone carvings, Tibet, circa 15th century, of elongated convex form worked in deep relief with an image of a dancing dakini on a lotus platform surrounded by stylised vegetal scrolls, one missing lower section
B. A ritual bell (ghanta), Tibet, 19th century, cast with a register of vajras below a garland of demonic heads, the handle with a terminal in the form of a vajra
C. A turned wood bowl in a brass lidded box, Tibet, 19th century
D. A rectangular carved bone pendant, Nepal, 19th century, on a beaded string

Condition

The bell cast in two parts, the handle attached above the shoulder, minor wear. The bone carvings - one fragmentary missing lower section. Both with wear. The pendant and bowl with some wear,as viewed.

Catalogue Note

The bell is one of the most important ritual implements in Vajrayana Buddhism. It represents supreme knowledge, which was seen as female. A comparable bell is in the British Museum, inv. no.OA 1948.7-16.11 (Zwalf 1985, p.144, no.202).
