Catalogue Note

The five portraits are as follows:

A. A seated nobleman, 18th century
B. A seated man with a falcon, 18th century
C. A seated man with a beard and orange turban, early 19th century
D. A pandit, possibly Chamba, circa 1740
E. A portrait of a kneeling prince, 18th century. The facial features and turban style of this portrait are similar to those of Raja Dip Chand of Bilaspur (r.1650-1667). However, the drawing is clearly a somewhat later production, and may therefore have been produced as part of a series of portraits of past rulers. For two portraits of Raja Dip Chand see Archer 1973, vol.II, p.169, no.1, and sale in these rooms 4 April 1978, lot 286.
