Catalogue Note
The coloured portrait is identified above as Kishor Singh, who ruled Kotah from 1684 to 1696 (these dates of his reign are discussed by Joachim Bautze in Welch 1997, pp.43-44, and differ from earlier citing of his dates, which had previously been described as 1670-1686). Kishor Singh was a senior officer in the Mughal army and spent much of his life, both before and after coming to the throne of Kotah, on campaign, mostly in the Deccan and Malwa. Bautze notes that all portraits show Kishor Singh in "an advanced stage of life", and thus the present portrait may be unique in showing him at a youthful age.
