Catalogue Note

This small, exquisite portrait of Savant Singh of Kishangarh as a prince is delicately executed in a manner that reveals the Mughal influence at Kishangarh in the early decades of the 18th century. The profile portrait on a green ground and the handling of the turban, waistband and dagger are inspired by Mughal work, but the slim-waist and accentuated facial features are exquisitely Kishangarhi. The quality and delicacy of the workmanship points to an artist of great skill working closely with Bhavanidas or Nihalchand. For other works from Kishangarh and further discussion of this school of painting see lots 18, 19 and 20 and 24 in this sale.
