Description

Arabic manuscript on paper, 5 lines to the page written in thuluth and naskh scripts, verses separated by gold dots, side and top panels decorated with later floral motifs, laid down on card with margins ruled in gold

Condition

In generally good overall condition, small losses at the lower left corner, and upper right quadrant, one minor area of retouching at the beginning of the third line, as viewed.

Catalogue Note

Abdulkadir Shukri Effendi (d.1806)
Abdulkadir Shukri Effendi studied calligraphy under the supervision of Abdurrahman Hilmi Effendi of Ayasofya (d.1805), a student of master Hoca Mehmed Rasim Effendi of Egrikapi (d.1755). He became court calligrapher and calligraphy teacher in the Imperial school (Enderun-i Humayun) in the Topkapi Palace. Sultan Selim III (r.1789-1807) studied calligraphy under his supervision. Occasionally he signed his works with honorific titles such as; Hace-i Sultani (Sultan's teacher), Hace-i Enderun-i Humayun (Teacher at the Imperial School), Katibu's-Sultani (Scribe of the Sultan). He inscribed many calligraphic panels and hilyes.

An 'Amma Juzz in naskh transcribed by him is in the Topkapi Palace Museum, Inv. No. TSM YY 134. A Quran manuscript transcribed by Abdulkadir Shukri Effendi can also be found in the Topkapi Palace Museum, Inv. No. HEA 21. A hilyeh-panel by him is in the same museum (Inv. No.TSM GY 1254) which displays his mastery both in thuluth and naskh. He died in 1806.
