Catalogue Note
Rifki Ahmed Effendi (d. circa 1737)
Born in Istanbul, Rifki Ahmed Effendi was Mahmud Agha's son. He studied the calligraphic styles of thuluth and naskh under the supervision of Seyyid Abdullah Effendi of Yedikule (d.1731), a student of court master Hafiz Osman Effendi (d.1698). His friend Suyolcuzade Mehmed Necib Effendi, in his Dawhat al-Kuttab ('Biographies of Calligraphers'), commemorates him as an honest man and an honourable master. He must have died a few years before 1737, the year Suyolcuzade Mehmed Necib Effendi completed his work.
