Ottoman Turkish manuscripts on paper, the first 107 leaves, 21 lines to the page written in naskh script in black ink, ruled in gold, various diagrams and charts; the second 30 leaves, 19 lines to the page written in nasta'liq script in black and red ink, wide outer margins; the third 23 leaves, 25 lines to the page and fewer, written in naskh script in black and red ink, various diagrams and illustrations, all three manuscripts with modern red bindings

Condition

In generally good overall condition, occasional smudges and stains, some small repairs, as viewed.

Catalogue Note

The three works are as follows:

1. kitab-e 'ilm-e musiqi 'ala wajh al-hurufut wa'l-isharat-e pardeha-ye musiqi. A book on the science of music, by means of letters and diagrams representing the musical modes.

2. al-mukhtasar min al-maqamat wa'l-usulat. A compendium of musical modes and rhythmic cycles. Copied by Sayyid Muhammad As'ad al-Mawlawi, dated the beginning of Rabi' al-Awwal 1262 AH/1846 AD. A waqf seal records the manuscript's donation by Sayyid Hafiz Ahmad 'Arif al-Mawlawi to the Mevlevihane in Üsküdar.

3. kitab-e adwar-e 'ilm-e musiqi. A Book of musical modes of the science of music. Folio 13a bears two dates, one 27 Shawwal 1075 AH/13 May 1665 AD, the other 25 Rabi' al-Akhar 1062 AH/5 April 1652 AD.
