Catalogue Note

Jade carvings of Guanyin are relatively rare and the present piece is notable for the finely carved detailing of the folds in the robes. For further examples of seated figures of Guanyin carved from jade, see a larger example also attributed to the 18th century, sold at Christie's London, 4th December 1995, lot 286; and a smaller carving sold at Christie's New York, 2nd December 1993, lot 71.
