Description

  • An Egyptian Alabaster Canopic Jar of Baboon-headed Hapy
  • Alabaster
  • Height 13 3/4 in. 34.9 cm
The stopper in the form of the baboon-headed deity, guardian of the lungs, with incised mouth and large eyes with pronounced brows, the four columns of inscription on the jar probably added in modern times.

Provenance

Henry Bourne Pillsbury, acquired prior to 1960
then by descent to the present owner

Condition

As shown and described. Both the jar and head were broken in several pieces in ancient or modern times. The resultant cracks and repairs were filled and executed with a material which has since discolored. There are restorations along some of these breaks and cracks, especially on the proper left side of the baboon head as well as the right side of the face and eyebrows. There is a modern paper label stuck to the bottom of the lid. There is some black pigment n the eyes and red on the mouth which could be ancient. The lid fits the jar very well but, as is often the case with canopic jars, one cannot be certain the two elements were together in antiquity.
