Description

  • Four Pottery Vessels
  • Terracotta
  • Heights 12 1/2 , 10, 4 3/4 , and 9 5/8 in. 31.7, 25.4, 12.1, and 24.4 cm.
comprising an Etruscan Bucchero oinochoe with double handle flanked by rotelles on the rim, the body molded with two registers of Pegasoi and felines and incised with canines, hares, and other motifs,7th/6th century B.C., an Italo-Corinthian oinochoe decorated with a grazing stag, a striding lion, and a swan, rosettes in the field, circa 6th century B.C., a Sicilian red-figured lekanis, attributed to the Lentini Painter or his workshop, the body decorated with a meander pattern, the lid with a kneeling Eros and a reclining woman holding a mirror, late 4th century B.C., and a Gnathia-ware trefoil oinochoe with ribbed body, the neck painted with a theater mask and sashes hanging from a dotted collar, late 4th Century B.C.

Condition

Bucchero oinochoe: repaired from several fragments with in-painting and areas of restorations along breaklines, small chip on rim, body worn overall, several areas of abrasion and chipping on entire vessel including handle have been painted in or over , Hearst number 12217 in pencil on underside of foot; Italo-Corinthian oinochoe: intact but worn overall; Apulian pyxys: glaze worn inside and out, one side handle chipped, remains of incrustation overall on body, lid also misfired but slightly less worn than body and with scratches over one figure, rim of lid handle chipped along one side, top of handle very worn and encrusted; Gnathian oinochoe: small crack below top of handle on back of neck is stable and appears to be a flaw, rim chipped in one place and with minor losses to glaze, other minor flaking and pitting to glaze on handle and body, foot worn.
