Description

  • A Chalcidian Black-figured Eye Cup, attributed to the Group of the Phineus Cup
  • Terracotta
  • Diameter at rim 10 1/2 in. 26.7 cm
the reserved tondo painted with two red concentric circles, the exterior decorated on each side with apotropaic eyes and ears flanking a nose, palmettes in each handle zone, the details in added red and white.

Condition

Repaired from several fragments with in-painting and minor areas of restoration along breaklines, four larger fills mostly concentrated in misfired area around foot, also restored are, all on one side, nose area, rim fragment comprising proper left eyebrow and top of proper left eye, and rim fragment comprising top of proper right palmette and ear, the interior seems to have been entirely painted over in black, the tondo inpainted in several areas, the exterior lacquered.
