  • A Marble Janiform Head of Dionysos

  • Height 10 1/2 in. 26.7 cm.
each with full beard of overlapping voluted curls each drilled in the center, long mustache, straight nose, and large eyes, his hair bound in a diadem and a wreath of ivy leaves and berries, the ends of the diadem falling over the ears.

Provenance

acquired in the 1970s from a gallery on Madison Avenue, New York

Condition

Generally good and as shown in pictures. One side has better preserved surface and small chip on tip of nose, other side is evenly weathered and is missing a little bit more of nose. Surface overall somewhat weathered especially on top. Areas of encrustation. Clusters of ivy berries on either side are all chipped in various degrees but mostly extant. Ends of diadem chipped off at neck level.
