Description

  • A Marble Relief Torso of a Man
  • marble
  • Height 13 3/8 in. 34 cm.
probably from a pedimental group, the neck and shoulders turned sharply to his left, a deep vertical groove on the lower back, the lower part of the body probably originally draped.

Provenance

Ernest Langrogne (1886-1967), 2 avenue Camoëns, Paris, acquired in Egypt in the early 1930s
Dr. Henri Deschamps (d. 2010), Paris, by descent

Condition

Very good and as shown. The back was roughly carved flat in antiquity. Since this is evidently from a high relief, there is a deep vertical or mortise at lower back, presumably fro attachment. There are ancient haphazard horizontal groove on his proper left flanks, not visible in the catalogue photo. Similar grooves occur to left shoulder on top.
