Catalogue Note
The portrait of George Washington is after a 1772 portrait by Charles Willson Peale which depicts Washington in the uniform of a British Colonel during the French and Indian Wars; the portrait of Martha Washington is after a portrait by John Wollasston, which depicts her as the 26-year-old widow of Daniel Parke Custis.
Both of the original portraits on which these miniatures are based are in the collection of the Lee Chapel and Museum at Washington and Lee University.
