Catalogue Note

The whimsical and trompe l'oeil pieces created by Gorham were signalled out by Carpenter in his book; after discussing two pieces with "fabric" decoration, he wrote of a cracker jar, "the mouse nibbling the crackers on the lid of the jar... was a device used a number of times by Gorham.  Another example has a cast mouse perched on the edge of a cheese plate."
