Catalogue Note
From a written description by the artist on a related painting: "Every year during Lent, rural communities throughout New Mexico reenact parts or all of the stages of the Passion of the Christ. This occasion allows for an amazing convergence of two distinct but strangely compatible cultures: Spanish Catholicism and the remnants of the pre-Hispanic civilizations: the Mexica, Tlaxcalans, the Tarascans, the Mixtecs...The painting combines numerous elements and personalities from both the Catholic and Native religious traditions."
