with separately carved arms bent sharply at the elbow, holding a rattle, wearing a cloth kilt, shell and bead necklace, and the remains of a pine ruff, the face mask painted with an unusual stylized feather pattern and adorned with shell earrings.

Catalogue Note

Stylistically, this doll resembles several in The Brooklyn Museum that were commissioned by Andrew Vanderwagen, a missionary who opened and closed a trading store at Zuni. Cf. Fane, Jackens and Breen, 1991, p. 112, for related examples and a discussion.
