Description

  • jade
the mature face referencing one of the old gods Huehueteotl or God N or L, with incised details on the eyes and lips, and adorned with a trefoil headband with a waterlily stem and pad emerging from the top; in olive green jade, pierced through the top of the head.

Catalogue Note

The sensitively carved features and three-dimensional aspect of this head pendant carving give it a portrait-like quality. The headdress ornaments of the sprouting waterlily and the trefoil band refer to the Jester God; it also has associations with the maize deity.
