Condition

Overall in very good condition. The kappa shells which comprise the shade are all intact and appear to be original and undisturbed. The kappa shells throughout with minor stress fractures, edge wear and losses, surface soiling and minor discolorations as seen in the catalogue illustration, which are consistent with age and the fragile nature of the material. A few of the stress fractures adjacent to the copper hardware with separation and lifting. The hand-wrought copper surfaces throughout appear to retain their original patina, with a few minor scratches, abrasions, surface soiling, and with a few scattered traces of surface oxidation consistent with age and use. All of the screws appear to be original and undisturbed on the base. This lamp was originally oil burning and was later adapted to an electrical lamp. It retains its original burner knobs and structural elements related to its original oil burning function. The outer components concealing the electrical socket used in the adaption appear to have been painted brown to match the patina of the base. With a later glass chimney not shown in the catalogue illustration. When seen illuminated, the shade presents in a warmer tone and the complex and detailed composition of the kappa shells are more visible. The lamp is highly sculptural and visual, and personifies the intricate design details and workmanship that characterize Rohlfs’ work.
