Catalogue Note
Chinese painting that taps natures from its source has cast a strong influence on Chu. How Chinese people depict nature contrasts sharply from naturalism of the West: after experiencing nature in the first person, one draws from the heart a meditation on nature that is then expressed on canvas. This creative approach radiating from the inside is markedly pronounced in Noyau de Lumières A (1989). Chu's dark blue brushstrokes follow a gentle, natural rhythm as they move along, creating a highly nuanced mood. The center of the canvas seemingly captures the imminence of dawn, where a clear light breaks through the deep blue night. Chu Teh-Chun incorporates the Asian philosophy of the harmonious coexistence of Heaven and Man and his own emotional instincts. Noyau de Lumières A has an enchanting allure: as light breaks out of darkness, the painting invites the viewer to savour the manifold wonders within.
