When Chu Teh-Chun was enrolled at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, he studied ink painting with Pan Tianshou and Lin Fengmian. Chu once claimed that Lin considered nature and feeling of spirit the two major elements that foster artistic creation; the fusion of striking colours into ink painting accentuates the visual sense of nature, overturning the traditional palette of purely washed-out colours. All of the above influenced Chu. Although Chu later chose oils as his principal creative medium, he never foregoes his passion for ink paintings. There is even a designated desk in his studio for ink painting and calligraphy. Metz 05 No.4 reveals how deftly Chu controls his brush and mixes colour, melding them with his instinctual response to nature in this portrait of the city of Metz in north-eastern France at the outset of spring, when joy is omnipresent and the earth rejuvenated.
