Catalogue Note
In Deer and Rabbit Seek the Botanical Deity (Lot 614) and Moon Rabbit Fantasia (Lot 615), artist Lu Ming-Te continues the conceptual, multimedia, and multi-textual style of his series from 2010; with a poetic elegance, the subtle and graceful quality of his imagery form unique landscapes. The exquisite scenery of each painting is covered by meandering plants and wondering animals; in the pale yellow tone of Moon Rabbit Fantasia and the lavender ambience of Deer and Rabbit Seek the Botanical Deity, folk-art style deer, frolicking rabbits, enormous fish and floral waves are juxtaposed with distant mountains. The definition between the mountains, rivers, plants and beasts are blurred in these parabolic compositions, lending them a timeless quality. Stylistically the works are reminiscent of classical Chinese Northern landscape paintings and bird and flower paintings, however, the medium, content and concepts are entirely contemporary, integrating multi-temporal, cross-generational and multi-cultural imagery into each composition.
