Catalogue Note
Weiss belonged to the highly successful school of Viennese trained Austrian and Bohemian artists, including Ludwig Deutsch and Rudolf Ernst, who made Orientalist subjects their metier and perfected the genre. The present work displays the academic rigour and attention to detail that characterise these artists' work, the wood panel in this case providing the perfect support for achieving an almost luminous clarity. Like Deutsch and Ernst, Weiss settled in Paris, where his Orientalist subjects found a ready market.
