Description
- tin, plastic
This unique set of tin toy flats made in Germany commemorates the American exploration of the North Pole by Admiral Robert E. Peary on 6 April 1909. Flats, the earliest tin figures, were crafted by pewtersmiths from metal scraps beginning in Germany in the late eighteenth century. These two-dimensional figures, approximately two inches in scale, were hand-engraved and hand-painted to realistically depict actual historic moments such as the famous Arctic expedition.
