Catalogue Note

Perhaps D.H. Lawrence's most popular novel and the first to be published after the scandal of The Rainbow, Women in Love also had a chequered and potentially libellous publishing history. Numerous well-connected contemporaries of Lawrence's saw themelves as being portrayed in the story and threatened legal action, resulting in amendments. The first edition was printed privately and consisted of 1250 copies, of which 50 were sold to Martin Secker as sheets and issued in England in June 1922.
