Catalogue Note

G.A Henty's first published book.

The prolific Victorian journalist and author George Alfred Henty (1832-1902) was an immensely popular and very successful writer of children's fiction (he wrote over 120 books) who, in his own lifetime and beyond, became "an institution for prep-school boys and their generous uncles: A.J.P. Taylor and others later declared they would not have become historians but for Henty. During his last decades he spent six months of each year writing, and six yachting" (Peter Newbolt, Oxford DNB).
