Catalogue Note
A near fine copy in cloth of the first edition of Hardy's comic but poignant Wessex story of sexual rivalry and fraternal loyalty set during the period of the Napoleonic wars. Purdy notes that the novel was published "in an edition of 1000 copies" and remarks that the three-line border "is less common than the 2-rule binding".
