Catalogue Note

Treasure Island, the "finest tale of maritime adventure that has been told since Defoe wrote his great romance" (Prideaux), first appeared in instalments in Young Folks between October 1881 and January 1882. Not initially well-received as a serial, it was an immediate success in this completed form.

This copy contains the following early issue points: "dead man's chest" not capitalised on pages 2 or 7; damage to "v" in "vain" last line page 40; lacking "a" on line 6 page 63; lacking numeral "7" page 127; lacking full-stop line 20 page 178; "worse" for "worst" line 3 page 197; publisher's advertisements dated 5G-783.
