Catalogue Note

A small number of fine lacquer bottles of this type are attributed to Fuzhou, as well as a larger group of conch-shaped bottles. A bottle of identical shape to the present example, and also painted with a river landscape was in the Kaynes-Klitz Collection, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 16th November 1989, lot 218. A gold-ground example of upright tapered rectangular form, painted with a bird on blossoming branches, is illustrated by Clare Lawrence, Miniature Masterpieces from the Middle Kingdom: The Monimar Collection of Chinese Snuff Bottles, London, 1996, p. 39, no. 13.
