Catalogue Note

Snuff bottles carved with faux brocade wraps are more usually found in jade and glass; a jasper example such as the present bottle is rare. For a discussion of the symbolism behind the brocade wrapping see the note to the yellow jade bottle carved with a faux brocade wrap in the present sale, lot 186. See also lot 21 for a carved yellow glass bottle of the same type attributed to the Beijing Palace Workshops.
