Catalogue Note
The ox-herder is often depicted on snuff bottles, sometimes with his great love the Weaver Maiden. These ill-fated life-long lovers are only able to meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month. On that day, known as the Qixi or Magpie Festival in the Chinese lunar calendar, all magpies on earth fly to the heavens and form a bridge across the stars so that the lovers can be together.
