Catalogue Note

Calcified jade is sometimes referred to as 'chicken bone jade' or 'burnt jade'. It can be created to imitate buried Neolithic jades by heating the stone to an extremely high temperature.

The design on the present bottle displays a sense of symmetry, but also contrasts the concave face with the crisply carved shou ('longevity') character on the reverse. For an example of a jade snuff bottle with an integral snuff dish, see Hugh Moss, Victor Graham and Ka BoTsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection, Hong Kong, 1995, Volume 1, pp. 212-213, pl. 87.
