Description

Engraved broadside document signed, accomplished in a clerical hand, on wove paper (15 1/2 x 17 1/2 in.; 392 x 444 mm; watermarked John C Clark phil'a); Washington, 28 February 1863, being Charles G. Davis's appointment as "Assessor of internal Revenue for the First Collection District of the State of Massachusetts, ..." countersigned by the Secretary of the Treasury ("S P Chase"), with an embossed seal of the Treasury Department lower left, endorsed on the verso by William Whitman, Justice of the Peace for Plymouth County, and with Internal Revenue stamp; short marginal tear, several long fold separations, one affecting Chase's signature, some marginal stains. Half white buckram portfolio.
