Catalogue Note

Litzi was the beautiful sister-in-law of the artist Sidney Smith, a close friend of O'Neill's. Born in 1925 outside Vienna, Litzi moved to Belfast aged 13 at the beginning of the Second World War and she subsequently met and married Stanley Smith before they moved to London in 1948. After being introduced to O'Neill through Sidney Smith who had first met Dan attending evening classes at the Belfast College of Art, Litzi became a regular muse for O'Neill and they developed a close friendship.
