Catalogue Note

While Solomatkin's themes were similar to those treated by his fellow artists, his choice of subjects was influenced by the realities of contemporary life. He regularly referenced popular folk culture in his work, from idioms in everyday speech, to colourful woodcut prints and fabrics, as we can see in the richly-patterned dress peeking out from under the figure's coat in the offered lot.
