Catalogue Note
The volume by Marie-Madeleine, Comtesse de La Fayette, bear the arms on the sides of Count Dmitry Petrovitch Boutourlin (1763-1829), director of the Imperial Hermitage, and the son of Count Peter Alexandrovitch, the Russian ambassador to Madrid. His god-mother was Empress Catherine II. In 1793, he settled in Moscow and began forming his famous library which finally consisted of 30,000 volumes but was destroyed in the fire of Moscow in 1812. This volume is one of the few books to have escaped the fire and is listed in the catalogue of Count Boutourlin's books which was published in 1805 (Catalogue des livres de M. le C-te Boutourline, revu par Barbier et Pougens, no. 3388).
