Catalogue Note

Piazza Sigmund Freud represents what photographer Lewis Baltz has called a 'paradigm shift' in his conceptual topographic work.  In 1988, after two decades of photographing the changing American landscape–its industrial parks, tract houses, highways, and landfills, all empty of their inhabitants–he began dividing his time between Europe and America, photographing increasingly in color, and with an emphasis on public rather than private architecture.  These works, many of which were made at night, incorporate the surrounding environment, including lights and vehicles.  Piazza Sigmund Freud is the parking lot for Milan's secondary Garibaldi commuter railroad station (Lewis Baltz 55, unpaginated).
