- THE TRIO
- daguerreotype
sixth-plate daguerreotype, with a modern seal, in a half-case, 1840s
Condition
This disarmingly playful image of a trio of young people, two of whom hold musical instruments, overrules conventional assumptions about daguerreotypes. The cliché of the rigid and somber daguerreian sitter is simply not present in this surprising image.
This wonderful and lively daguerreotype is essentially in excellent condition. Crisp and clear detail is visible throughout. The only aspect of the image not in precise focus is the middle subject, whose features are very slightly softened due to movement. The plate has a subtle but pleasing rose tonality, especially when viewed at a slight angle. Visible in the catalogue illustration is a small circular spot above the sitter's heads in the upper right quadrant. Customary tarnishing follows the lines of the mat. The unevenness of this tarnishing suggests that the plate shifted somewhat in its mat at some point in the past. The plate at present is partially sealed with a piece of cellotape in the center of each edge.

Catalogue Note
The young man on the left poses with assured insouciance, casually holding his flute in one hand; the seated young woman on the right holds a concertina and regards the camera with an alert but relaxed air. The third member of this trio is the white-bonneted young woman who leans into the frame, her just-slightly blurred figure suggesting that her presence there is a surprise.
